Farmers' Daily reported that crop straw, which used to have nowhere to be processed, is now being turned into treasure in the hands of researchers. The straw based biodegradable plastic film developed by the Institute of Biobased Chemicals of Quzhou "Two Institutes" of Zhejiang University is showing green new uses in the fields.
Straw is a highly potential renewable resource, "said Li Zhenglong, director of the Institute of Biobased Chemicals. Agricultural film made from straw has biodegradable properties and can replace traditional polyolefin film, effectively reducing the environmental pollution caused by plastic products. The cost of this type of plastic film is about 10000 yuan per ton, which is 20% to 30% lower than the price of general biodegradable plastic films on the market, further reducing the cost.
At present, this straw based biodegradable film has been demonstrated in fields in provinces such as Yunnan. Wang Hongkun, a specially appointed associate researcher at the Institute of Biobased Chemicals, introduced that the plastic film can be completely degraded in about two months. However, due to the growth habits of different crops and environmental differences in different regions, the team still needs to further adjust the biodegradability and other properties of the plastic film, and large-scale promotion still takes time.
In addition to biodegradable plastic film, the team is also exploring another use of straw to prepare renewable aviation fuel, providing a zero carbon alternative to "green flight" in the aviation industry. Li Zhenglong led the team through multiple rounds of research and development, which not only greatly reduced the number of operating units, but also further reduced the energy demand, greatly reducing the fixed and operating costs of the process, and achieving a high yield of renewable aviation oil. At present, the team has independently designed and built a pilot scale device, and all performance indicators of the product meet the design requirements and are stably produced. Next, the team will accelerate the industrialization of technology and enable more "straw aviation fuel" to replace petrochemical fuels as soon as possible, promoting the green and low-carbon transformation of the aviation industry. Just a few days ago, Professor Li Zhenglong's team had in-depth discussions with relevant officials from Shanghai Airport and Yuewei Capital on the cooperation and industrialization development model of bio based renewable aviation fuel technology between institutions and enterprises.
From the fields to the blue sky and white clouds, each straw is being endowed with new value, extending more possibilities in the green and low-carbon cycle chain.
The "two institutes" of Zhejiang University Quzhou refer to the Quzhou Branch of the School of Engineering at Zhejiang University and the Quzhou Research Institute at Zhejiang University. The two houses were officially unveiled and operated together on December 28, 2018.
Zhejiang University Quzhou "Two Institutes" Institute of Biobased Chemicals is committed to the pretreatment and separation of lignocellulosic biomass, catalytic conversion of platform compounds, catalytic attachment of biobased chemicals, high-value utilization of lignin, research on cellulose and hemicellulose based materials and high-value chemicals, aiming to build a first-class biomass chemical industrialization platform and comprehensively promote the green and healthy development of Quzhou's biomass chemical industry.
